Even though firefighters are trained to understand the dangers of CO poisoning and to recognize potential signs and symptoms, CO poisoning can go unrecognized and untreated, leading to short-term risk and long-term health problems.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®) has released an updated NFPA 1584 Standard on the Rehabilitation Process for Members During Emergency Operations and Training Exercises that expands medical monitoring requirements.
- Assessment of vital signs is required for firefighters entering rehabilitation. This new requirement includes temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and pulse oximetry (SpO2).
- Assessment for carbon monoxide poisoning for all firefighters exposed to smoke is required.
